As we drove from Alamogordo to Roswell, we went from the desert to the mountains. The pine trees were tall and narrow and there was no underbrush. (Unfortunately, since it was past sunset, I could not take any pictures.)

In the mountains, we stopped for dinner in Ruidoso. We had NEVER heard of Ruidoso. Well, let's just say that we will one day return there to stay for a few days! Ruidoso has horse racing, skiing, a casino, and a Walmart. We actually saw a cowboy on horseback in the Walmart parking lot. How cool was that?!

White Sands National Monument - Holloman AFB, NM

This was definitely surreal. The white sand is made of gypsum. Sleds are available for purchase so that visitors can ride down the sandy slopes. What can be better than sleigh riding in shorts and a tee shirt? They even plow the sand to clear the road! Walking on the dunes, we felt like we were in a sci-fi movie. I [Adriana] especially liked the covered picnic benches. Can you find the hidden Mickey?

New Mexico Museum of Space History - Alamogordo, NM

Since it was raining on Sunday morning, we went to the space history museum. It had very interesting exhibits. Holloman Air Force Base, near Alamogordo, was the location where they used chimpanzees and humans to test the effects of speed on the body in preparation for space travel. It started raining as we were viewing the external exhibits so we did not get to see the site where the first chimpanzee in space, HAM, is buried.
